Latin American Studies Program
This four-week program offers students and young professionals the opportunity to have an academic and cultural experience in Colombia, one of the most diverse countries in Latin America.
La Sabana's Latin American Studies Program (LASP) offers undergraduate and postgraduate students from a wide range of disciplines a unique opportunity to immerse themselves academically, linguistically, and culturally in the heart of Latin America. Based in Chía, Colombia, just outside the capital city of Bogotá, this 4-week program provides an enriching environment where students can both learn Spanish and delve into specialized academic courses to deepen their understanding of Latin America.
The structure of the program will allow participants to balance language acquisition with in-depth exploration of Latin America's socio-political and cultural dynamics. Students will engage in an intensive Spanish language course, delivered by our highly qualified professors at the International Centre for Languages and Foreign Cultures. We believe that this is essential for them to fully appreciate and interact with the local culture and to enhance their understanding of Latin American studies.
At the same time, participants will complete one of two specialized courses designed to give students a comprehensive overview of Latin America’s rich cultural and political contexts. Students may choose between two focused academic streams:
- Navigating Latin America's Past and Present: Conflict, Justice, and Human Rights
- Latin Lens: Traditions, Perspectives, and History in Latin America
Upon completion of the program, students will be required to undergo assessments, which may include quizzes, oral presentations, class participation and exams. Successful participants will receive official transcripts to document their academic achievements (3 Colombian credits/4.8 ECTS).
Live the Latin American experience and make it an invaluable opportunity to expand your global perspective!
This course offers an immersive exploration into the political, social, and cultural dynamics of Latin America, with a particular focus on Colombia. Students will gain a deep understanding of the region's complex history, including the armed conflict in Colombia and the efforts toward peace and justice. The program is structured into four key modules: Introduction to Latin America, History of the Armed Conflict in Colombia, Transitional Justice, and the Inter-American System of Human Rights. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to study Spanish and learn directly from leading scholars and experts in these fields, enhancing both their linguistic and academic skills.
This module provides a panorama of Latin America, offering an overview of the region's history, politics, economy, society, and international relations. Students will engage with key topics such as economic development, cultural diversity, and regional integration. By the end, students will have a holistic view of the region’s dynamics and the forces shaping its future.
In this module, students examine the Colombian armed conflict, focusing on its historical origins, key actors, and significant phases. They will explore critical debates and the conflict’s global and regional impact, including its effects on Latin American geopolitics and international security.
Focusing on Colombia and the 2016 Peace Agreement, this module delves into transitional justice in post-conflict settings. Students will analyze key concepts, institutions, and justice approaches while examining human rights, victims' rights, and challenges within Colombia’s transitional justice framework.
This module investigates the roles and functions of key institutions within the Inter-American System for the protection of human rights, focusing on the Inter-American Commission and Court of Human Rights. Students will assess contemporary human rights challenges in the Americas and evaluate the system's effectiveness in addressing critical issues.
